Lisbon is an incredible city tucked away on the coast of Portugal. It may be known for its history and ornate architecture, but Lisbon has one-of-a-kind restaurants and is filled with activities to do. The following are some activities, sights to see, and restaurants to check out while in Lisbon for the Global Scrum Gathering.
The Torre de Belém is a must-see in Lisbon. This tower, located at the seafront, was originally built to defend Lisbon in 1514 and 1520. You can go into the tower and see the old cannons it houses and even go into the pits and holes where prisoners were once held.
Lisbon is known for its history and part of this can be seen in the Alfama District. The Alfama District is the oldest part of Lisbon. When walking around the winding streets you will see the Lisbon Cathedral, tile-covered chapels, remains of old city walls, and hidden squares.
The Monastery of Jerónimos gives visitors a glance into The Age of Exploration, known as Portugal’s most glorious age.
Riding the Funiculars up and down Lisbon’s hills is a joy. With tracks dating back to the 1800s it is a great way to get around and see the culture of Lisbon.
Museums are a staple for anyone visiting Lisbon with so many to choose from. The Berardo Collection Museum is one of the most popular museums in Lisbon featuring modern artwork ranging from neo-realism to abstract expressionism. Another unique museum in Lisbon is the National Tile Museum.
Lisbon Oceanarium rises out of the Tagus Estuary. Inside there are many exhibits featuring an expansive variety of marine life. There is so much to see here but some highlights are moray eels, penguins, puffer fish, and sharks.
The Bairro Alto features many cafes and restaurants but if you stick around until late in the night the district truly comes to life. After hours this district turns into the city’s top nightlife spot featuring live music and bohemian drinking joints among other things.
The Mercado de Ribeira (Time Out Market) is a multiple story food hall known for quirky food vendors and cutting edge eateries. The downstairs features local fruit and vegetable sellers so get there early and try something new.
O Velho Eurico is a great place to connect with the locals of Lisbon. It serves traditional Portuguese food and has a great atmosphere to relax. Reservations can be made via the email list on their Instagram page.
